Repeat rain isn’t stopping people from attending the Butler Farm Show

BUTLER, Pa. — Tuesday marked the second day of the 78th Annual Butler Farm Show. For many, it’s a family tradition.

“I have never probably missed the farm show. Maybe a couple times over my years,” said Brenda Reppart of Grove City. “Big fan of the farm show, yes!”

Reppart enjoys it all. From seeing animals like cows, rabbits, goats and llamas, watching the kids in her family ride the carnival rides, and of course, enjoying all of the food.

Festivities kicked off on Monday, and of course, the rain has made an impact. The president of the Farm Show said they’re used to it.

“Typically, when you hear farm show week is coming, you know it’s a week of, a few days if not a full week, of weather,” said Ken Laughlin, President of the Butler Farm Show Board.

Some of the farm show grounds are a bit muddy — especially the parking lot.

“We have a crew of folks to go out and if they’re stuck, we pull them out and we take care of getting people in and out of the parking lots if they would happen to get stuck,” Laughlin said.

Despite the rain in the forecast, people in attendance Tuesday said it’s not stopping them from their family traditions.

“I mean, I’ll drive my car through a mud pit if I have to. It doesn’t affect me,” said Hannah Medsger of Butler. “It really isn’t the farm show if you don’t have rain. It hasn’t stopped anybody. It’s just a part of it, yearly!”

Organizers said most of the events are rain or shine, but if severe weather does roll through, they will announce over the loudspeakers for everyone to evacuate and get to their car.

“We have a safety plan in place for any problems like that that would come up,” Laughlin said.

Laughlin said they had a big crowd Monday night for the drag race at the grandstand, saying the rain hasn’t hurt attendance so far.

“I think you should come whether it’s raining or not,” Medsger said. “There’s good food, good people, lots of animals, I mean, you might get your car washed for free in the rain! So, it shouldn’t stop you!”
