Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race returns this weekend

PITTSBURGH — A popular Pittsburgh race will be back this weekend!

The Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race is taking over the streets of the Steel City on Saturday and Sunday.

The event is presented by Highmark and offers a spread of races for runners, joggers and walkers of all ages and abilities.

Saturday includes the Dollar Bank Junior Great Race from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., the Family Fun Run, the Tot Trot and the Diaper Dash at Point State Park.

Things pick up more on Sunday, with the 10K and 5K races.

The 10K race starts on Beechwood Blvd near Frick Park and ends at Point State Park.

The 5K starts in Oakland and also finishes in Point State Park.

This the 49th year the race has been held after it was started by Mayor Richard Caliguiri.

Caliguiri died of amyloidosis, a rare disease in which abnormal proteins called amyloid build up in one or more organs. The race is now designed to raise awareness of that disease.
