Pennsylvania State Police are investigating an organized fraud scheme in which scammers impersonate federal law enforcement officials to steal millions of dollars from victims nationwide.
Law enforcement officers recently took two individuals into custody on Interstate 80 in Union County in connection with the ongoing investigation.
The scam typically begins with a pop-up message on a computer screen, followed by contact from individuals claiming to be federal officials. Perpetrators persuade victims that their personal information is linked to criminal activity and instruct them to buy gold bars or coins to turn over to couriers.
“Victims have been identified across the country, including in Maryland and Washington State,” the Pennsylvania State Police said. Authorities noted that “PSP believes there may be additional victims who have not yet been identified,” and added that “to date, approximately $6.5 million has been stolen through this scheme.”
State police outlined the specific tactics used by perpetrators after making contact with targets.
Troopers said a vehicle involved in this scheme has been identified as a silver 2025 Honda Accord bearing California registration 9TTS143.

In response to the thefts, state police issued a clear warning about official police procedures.
“No legitimate law enforcement officer will instruct you to purchase gold or give cash or gold to a courier,” the Pennsylvania State Police said.
