Westinghouse’s eVinci microreactor lands Army contract for Fort Drum power project

Westinghouse Electric Co.’s eVinci nuclear microreactor is getting a big boost from the U.S. Army, which has signed up for it to provide electrical power at Fort Drum in upstate New York.

Westinghouse Government Services was one of five vendors that will share $2.2 billion for nuclear power projects at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Fort Hood, Texas; and Fort Benning, Georgia. The Army’s initial funding called Project Janus will also be accompanied by what the Army called “significant capital investment from each vendor.” It wasn’t immediately clear how much the total spend would be.

The U.S. Army said the prototype reactors, including Westinghouse’s, would be owned and operated by the contractors and be in the range of 5 megawatts of power.
