PITTSBURGH — With no events or hockey games at PPG Paints Arena, and no fans allowed at games inside PNC Park before the season ended, there were no fans for Aramark to serve.
The company behind the concessions at the venues alerted the state that it laid off 1,225 workers from both sites. The layoffs date back to March.

In Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification alerts filed with the Department of Labor and Industry, the company cites the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason behind the layoffs.
The Penguins played the final games of the season in Toronto, one of two bubble sites where the NHL hosted the remainder of the season. The Pirates did play at PNC Park, but with no fans, there was no need to open concession stands. There were no concerts or other major events held at either venue over the summer as well.
Aramark also services Heinz Field. With up to 5,500 fans allowed inside, there is a need for employees to operate concessions, albeit greatly reduced.
