Platelet donors critically needed in Pittsburgh to help cancer patients

PITTSBURGH — There is currently a significant need in the Pittsburgh region for platelet donations, which help cancer patients while they undergo treatment.

“Right now we are in a critical state with platelets,” said Kristen Lane, communications manager with Vitalant. “We really need people to donate if they’re able.”

Vitalant provides donated platelets to both UPMC and AHN hospitals. The nonprofit aims to have a “several days’ supply” at each one at all times, but right now, “we are getting below our comfort zone,” Lane said.

Cancer treatments like chemotherapy can impact a patient’s own platelet count, and so transfusions are crucial.

“We never want to run the risk of having someone come in for their cancer treatment, and needing platelets and not having those platelets available.”

The process to donate platelets is different from a typical blood donation, and requires a machine.

“You actually have your whole blood removed from your body and a centrifuge spins out the platelets,” Lane explained. “Then, your red blood cells and plasma is returned to your body.”

A saline solution is included, and so donors typically feel less fatigued than is common following a standard blood donation.

The donation can take up to two hours, and is painless beyond the initial prick, Lane said.

Channel 11 spoke with a Gibsonia man on Wednesday as he made his 135th donation.

“Recently, I know somebody who’s going through breast cancer and I know platelets are used to help breast cancer patients,” said Dan Buckley. “I just do it. I’m retired and it’s a good thing.”

Buckley planned to read and watch television during his donation.

“No big deal,” he said. “That little bit of time out of your life to help somebody out makes you feel good.”

In general, anyone who’s healthy can donate platelets, and donations can be made every seven days, up to 24 times a year. Vitalant is currently accepting all blood types.

The nonprofit has 10 donation centers across Western Pennsylvania, with varying hours. Appointments are encouraged. For more information, visit vitalant.org
