VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The body of an 8-year-old Virginia girl who had gone missing was found Friday along a beach, and it is believed she drowned, police said.
Virginia Beach police received a report that the child was missing around 8 p.m. Thursday, police said in a statement. The child had last been seen near the water's edge.
Police searched the area overnight. A resident found the girl's body around 2 a.m. Friday along the beach. Despite rescue efforts, the girl was pronounced dead.
Authorities haven't released the girl's name.
Beach lifeguards fielded 65 reports of lost children throughout the day, including during a Fourth of July celebration, The Virginian-Pilot reported.
