Delta employee accused of stealing $250K from bag at New York's JFK Airport

A Delta Air Lines employee is accused of taking more than $250,000 in cash, rather than scanning and loading it onto a plane at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, authorities said Thursday.

Quincy Thorpe, 40, a baggage handler for Delta, was arrested at his Brooklyn home early Thursday, WABC reported. According to a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office, Thorpe made his first appearance in court and was released after posting $80,000 bond, CNN reported.

According to a criminal complaint, an armored vehicle brought eight bags of cash to the airport Tuesday, which was to be loaded onto Delta Flight 1225 bound for Miami, according to WABC.

Police said Thorpe took one bag of cash that contained $258,205, WCBS reported.

Officials at Victim Security Company, which was transporting the money,  discovered the bag was missing when the plane landed in Miami, according to  WNBC.

Thorpe called out sick in the two days after the alleged theft, CNN reported. The FBI interviewed Thorpe at his home, and investigators said he admitted he knew the bags he was loading contained cash, the network reported.

“The alleged actions of this employee are unacceptable and in no way reflect the professionalism and values we expect from Delta team members," Delta said in a statement. "We are taking this situation very seriously and working directly with authorities on their investigation as well as conducting an internal investigation of our own."
