Construction begins to restripe Squirrel Hill roadway, add bicycle lane markings

PITTSBURGH — Today, construction is underway on a small but well-traveled road connecting the City of Pittsburgh to Carnegie Mellon University’s campus.

The roadwork is part of a city plan to make Morewood Avenue safer for drivers and more bike-friendly.

The portion of Morewood Avenue between Fifth Avenue and Forbes Avenue is being repaved and restriped.

“So anything that adds bike infrastructure to the city and keeps cyclists safe, I’m all in favor of. So, it’s really a good thing,” said cyclist Al Meder.

“I know many people who have been in that zone and cycling down the slope. And there have been cars trying to turn in and they have been startled by the cars really stopping and trying to turn in,” said cyclist Tejas Rane.

The project includes new bicycle shared-lane markings and about 400 feet of dedicated bike lanes.

“I personally don’t bike but I know a lot of people who do. And sometimes they talk about how kind of dangerous it is. So, I think it’s good that they’re making it a little bit safer,” said Sannaa Akindele, a CMU student.

Now that this area is getting fresh paint and markings, some cyclists hope the city prioritizes another area in Oakland.

“There’s a section that goes through Oakland down through the lower part of Frick Park. They’re some tracks down there and it’s a heavily commuted area. So I’d love to see some more green and bike lanes down there,” said Meder.

Weather permitting, the city say the Morewood Avenue bike lane markings and repaving project is expected to be finished by the end of next week.
