Fayette County courthouse hit by bullet; 1 juvenile in custody

UNIONTOWN, Pa. — A Uniontown and state police investigation is underway after a scary situation Thursday afternoon at the Fayette County courthouse in Uniontown.

Officials say someone fired a gun outside the building around 3 p.m., sending a bullet through an upper-floor window in the back of the courthouse.

“It’s a concern for everybody around here,” said Stanley Riley, who lives nearby. “This has never happened here as long as I’ve been around the area.”

According to Uniontown police, a juvenile suspect is in custody.

Their name and age have not been released.

The charges they could face are not currently known.

“The courthouse is filled with great people from the judges to everybody who works over there. I heard that everybody is safe and I’m glad everybody’s safe,” said attorney Michael Ford.

Uniontown police confirm no one was hurt.

Officers say the courthouse is not believed to be the intended target, but it’s still unclear what led up to a shot being fired.

“It just speaks to how brazen people are becoming these days,” said Ford.

Ford was not in the courthouse when the bullet came through the window, but he could sense a change in attitude when he was inside later in the day.

“You could tell something happened because it was just different, the way security was acting, and they were on basically high alert,” Ford said.
