Many consumers are paying significantly more than necessary for their mobile phone services, with monthly bills ranging from around $50 to over $100 for a single line from major carriers.
Budget-friendly alternatives are available and can drastically reduce these costs.
Adding multiple lines can decrease the cost per line, but monthly bills can still become unmanageable if consumers are not careful.
Some customers find themselves paying hundreds of dollars each month for their phone service. For example, one Verizon customer reported paying $260 a month for two lines, totaling more than $3,100 annually.
Major wireless providers own and operate more affordable brands that utilize their existing network infrastructure. Verizon owns Visible, both of which operate on the same network. T-Mobile owns Mint Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile. AT&T owns Cricket Wireless.
These budget-friendly services can significantly lower phone bills. However, they may not include perks such as free streaming services or phone upgrade deals, and they often come with certain limitations.
Dallas Cox, who works for Clark.com covering wireless deals and savings, explains the difference in service. “I had someone explain it to me like a fast pass on a roller coaster, like we’re going to the same ride, but one of us might get there a little bit faster,” Cox said.
Cox advises consumers to understand the specifics of budget plans. “You need to know if your speeds are being throttled after a certain amount or if they’re being capped,” Cox stated.
Consumer expert Clark Howard notes that many individuals purchase unlimited plans without actually needing them, leading to unnecessary extra costs. He also points out that many discount carriers offer free trial periods, often lasting about a week, allowing consumers to test a new service before fully committing.
To switch carriers, consumers must be a “free agent,” meaning their current phone needs to be fully paid off and unlocked. This allows them the flexibility to choose a new provider.
Consumers interested in switching to a budget-friendly service can take advantage of trial periods offered by discounters. Ensuring current phones are paid off and unlocked will provide the ability to choose new service providers.
