HOMESTEAD, Pa. — An investigation is underway after a Homestead police officer shot a man overnight.
The Allegheny County Police Department, the agency investigating the officer-involved shooting, says Homestead Police were notified of a shoplifting incident in the 200 block of East 8th Avenue just after 1 a.m. Responding officers located a man they thought was involved in the incident nearby, in the 800 block of Amity Street.
ACPD says Homestead officers tried to stop the man, but he ran. He was quickly located again in an alley near East Hazel Way.
When the Homestead officers again tried to approach the man, he shot at them, per ACPD. Then, one of the Homestead officers returned fire, hitting the man in the hand.
The man, who ACPD officials identify as Mitchell Johnson, 20, of Braddock, was taken into custody soon after he was shot. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
No officers were hurt during the gunfire.
ACPD says Johnson will face multiple charges, including attempted homicide, assault of a law enforcement officer and carrying a firearm without a license.
The status of the Homestead officer who shot Johnson will “be determined by Homestead Police in accordance with their policies and procedures.” The officer has not been identified.
