Man recalls finding his friend shot in Pittsburgh’s Strip District

PITTSBURGH — Crime scene tape is still up outside of Lucky’s Bar in the Strip District.

Police rushed to Penn Avenue after someone fired shots and a man ended up in the hospital.

Jordan Cherry was inside Lucky’s Bar late Friday Night when someone started shooting.

“When I heard the first gun pop, I was like, ‘Wow, no, that’s not happening.’ But right after that, there were three more. And I literally just froze and I saw everyone screaming and running,” Cherry said.

Cherry’s friend was hit by the gunfire. He went to the hospital in critical condition, but Cherry says he’s going to survive.

“Justice will be served. I don’t know when or how. But everything done in the dark comes to light,” Cherry said.

He found his friend lying on the steps leading up to Lucky’s deck.

“The shooting was happening at the back door, so we were all running to the front door,” Cherry said. “I ended up running back around outside and I see him lying on the patio deck. There was blood into Lucky’s, all over the patio floor.”

It’s the second shooting in recent months in the Strip District.

Back in August, La’Eva Morrison was shot and killed at the intersection of 27th and Liberty.

At the time, police took three people in for questioning, but they were all released.

No one has been charged in Morrison’s death.

Today, people in the Strip were surprised to hear about yet another shooting in the neighborhood.

“It’s a shame because you don’t want to have to look over your back, but I guess with stuff like this you kind of have to,” Michael Weleski said.

As for Cherry, he doesn’t know if he’ll be back any time soon.

“This is one of the tourist places. People like to come here for Wholey’s fish sandwiches, restaurants; it’s a good attraction for tourists, and that’s being taken away by violence like this,” Cherry said.

Lucky’s put up a Facebook post saying the shooting was not in the bar and no bar patrons were involved.

Police tell us the exact location of the shooting is part of the investigation, but say the altercation started inside the bar.
