Millions of dogs are brought to animal shelters in the United Sates every year and 35% of them are euthanized, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
National Make A Dog's Day on Oct. 22 helps raise awareness about the problem and encourages people to adopt a pet from a shelter instead of buying a new dog from shops or breeders.
The observation is part of National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month, which is sponsored by the ASPCA.
One of the best ways to make a dog's day is, of course, adopting a shelter dog into a loving home, but there are other ways to make a difference, too.
Animal lovers can stop by a local animal shelter and take a dog for a walk or bring a dog a new chew toy. That will make a dog’s day for sure.
Shelters also welcome new blankets, treats and donations. Check shelter websites for items that are most needed.
