DORMONT, Pa. — Dormont officials are taking steps to regulate vape shops in the borough.
A special meeting was held about an amendment addressing these businesses on Monday.
Council members voted unanimously to establish vape shops as a “conditional land use,” meaning those looking to open a vape shop will have to meet specific operational standards, permissions and location criteria.
Vape shops are not permitted to be within 1000 feet of another shop.
Other communities have had to deal with similar situations.
Back in March, neighbors in Mount Lebanon were concerned about a new vape shop opening along Washington Road just a few feet away from another vape shop in town.
At the time, township commissioners said they cannot legally forbid the shops from opening.
They said they can only change zoning rules to restrict where vape shops can go and how close they can be to schools, parks and churches.
The City of Pittsburgh and Ross Township also have ordinances restricting vape shop developments.
