The South Allegheny School District was awarded two $25,000 state grants totaling $50,000 Wednesday to fund new school safety equipment following a shooting incident at a high school football game late last month.

The funding arrives after a gunshot was fired during an Aug. 28 football game at South Allegheny High School, where a teenager was arrested and charged as an adult.
State Rep. Dan Goughnour, State Rep. John Inglis and State Sen. Nick Pisciottano announced the grants to assist district officials in upgrading campus security measures.
Half of the state funding will purchase two CEIA OPENGATE weapons detection systems, two handheld metal detector wands and a subscription to NetID Anywhere software.
The second $25,000 grant will fund portable ballistic shields for school police officers.
The district expects the new weapons detection equipment to be fully operational for the Sept. 18 home football game. For this week’s game, South Allegheny will use borrowed detection systems from the Hempfield Area School District.
